Optimizing your website for the Search Engines has long been a controversial thing. Even experts disagree on the basic effectiveness of the whole practice. Most of us agree that there is indeed some things that you can do, behind the scenes, to enhance the opinion that Google, Bing and Yahoo may have of you.
That being said, how much is enough? How much is too much? That depends on your site. Is it trying to reach a global audience or a local one? Is it a brand that you have worked long hard developing, or is it more disposable? What you you trying to accomplishing?
For instance, say you are a local realtor. Let’s also say that you show up in Google’s Search Results Page in position 6 on the first page.
The top producers in your city are in positions 1 through 5. How much additional income would you bring in each year if you were just ranked 1 place further up the list. Let’s say you were able to close 8 more deals a year by being in 4 or 5 instead of 6. Depending on the quality of real estate you sell, that could be a serious pay raise.
Sometimes, just rising above the your next competitor is enough. Sometimes, no matter what you do, you will never make the first position. Luckily you don’t have to.
